Itinerary:7:55 Shinjuku bus stop→Take the highway bus→Matsumoto bus stop→Matsumoto Castle→Matsumoto City Hall→Matsumoto Accommodation

Matsumoto Castle, a famous castle in Japan

Matsumoto Castle was designated as a national treasure in 1941.

Matsumoto Castle is the oldest surviving five-story, six-story national treasure castle in Japan, dating back to Fukashiki Castle built during the Eisho period of the Sengoku period. Because it is one of the only five national treasure castles in Japan, the castle is surrounded by the Tensho (the highest and most dominant part of a Japanese castle, and one of the symbols of power). The name "Tenshokaku" is a new name since the Meiji era). It is worth stopping to take pictures of the moat with the Northern Alps as a backdrop. Matsumoto Castle is unique in that it has a complex linking of the large and small tensho, which is a unique structure of Matsumoto Castle.

The cherry blossom viewing period in Matsumoto Castle is scheduled from early April to mid-April.

About 3,300 cherry blossoms have been planted in Matsumoto Castle Park and Honmaru Garden. Officials have announced that from the 3rd to the 8th day after the blooming season, a cherry blossom light show and concert will be held in the National Treasure Matsumoto Castle Sky Guard and Honmaru Garden, which is called the “Night Cherry Blossom Festival” of the National Treasure Matsumoto Castle.

Okinawan Shotengai - Enjoy a stroll at the foot of the Imperial City

"Komonote Shotengai is a shopping street along the Toba River, which runs through the center of Matsumoto City. It is affectionately called "Frog Street". The buildings along the street are bungalow-style buildings that were once provided to samurai by wealthy families, and the street is paved with stone slabs, which gives it the feel of the Edo period. As you walk along the street, you will find historical art stores, traditional soba restaurants that have been in business for a long time, and stylish open cafes and western-style restaurants, making it an interesting blend of the old and the new.

It is surrounded by the Northern Alps, including the Hotaka mountain range and Yakidake (an active volcano on the main line of the Hida mountain range, one of the 100 most famous mountains in Japan, with an elevation of 2,455 meters), with the Azusa River flowing at the foot of the mountains, and with Kawatomo Bridge and other excellent scenic spots in the vicinity. Kamikochi has been designated as a National Cultural Property (a special place of interest and a special natural monument) as part of the Yamatake National Park, and is one of Japan's premier mountain sightseeing destinations.

Located in the upper reaches of the Azusa River in the western part of Nagano Prefecture, Kamikochi is a small basin with an elevation of about 1,500 meters, surrounded by the Hodakurinboku, Yakidake, and Tokonen mountain ranges, and is a Chubu Sanno National Park. The 2,702-meter stack is often used as a starting point for visiting Norikura, where you can enjoy hiking while climbing and viewing alpine plants. Norikura is the 19th highest mountain in Japan, and the autumn foliage is particularly beautiful. There are many tourists who come here for hiking and sightseeing in the fall. Norikura is also known as Japan's easiest mountain to climb above 3,000 meters.

After climbing the Riding Saddle, you can also take a hot spring bath in the evening to relieve your fatigue and relax your tired muscles.

Hida Takayama

This town has been preserved since the Edo period and is called "Hida's Little Kyoto". You can enjoy shopping for traditional handicrafts and confectionery while eating delicious rice cake dumplings. If you arrive in the morning, you may be able to catch the local morning market. In recent years, it has become a popular place to visit on the Holy Land Tour because of the movie "Your Name".
The Takayama Festival is held twice a year, in spring and fall. There is a grand and colorful altar and a parade in traditional costumes. The Takayama Matsuri is registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Kamisanomachi

Gourmet: A variety of dishes made with melt-in-your-mouth Hida beef are popular among local people and tourists.
Hida Beef refers to the black-haired Wagyu cattle raised in the Hida region by local people living in Gifu Prefecture.
We recommend eating local delicacies such as Hida beef kebabs, fried beef patties, and nutmeg while walking.

Takayama Kamisanomachi Old Town

Located on the east bank of the Miyagawa River, which flows through Takayama City, this old town was a merchant town in its heyday. In particular, the area of Kamisanomachi, Kamininomachi, and Kaminichinomachi, known as the “Three Towns,” is a must-see in Takayama because of its well-preserved Edo period architecture. This area has been designated by the Japanese government as an "Important Traditional Building Groups Protection Area". Takayama's old streets are lined with latticework windows with streams running under them, sake cellars with "sake forests" made of cedar leaves, and rows of curtains on the doors of large houses and old shops along the street. Traditional sweets and handicrafts stores, signature salty and sweet grilled glutinous rice balls, and Hida beef kebabs line the street, attracting tourists from the north and south.

Nakahashi

"Nakanohashi Bridge" is a scenic spot that can be seen from the Jinya. Next to the bridge is the Hie Shrine Guest House (a place where mikoshi (portable shrines) rest or stay on their way to a shrine festival, or a destination for mikoshi (portable shrines)), which is known as a place of energy (a place of special power invisible to the eye and a place where the life force flourishes).
Shen Yu (神輿) is the vehicle that carries the god.
Kagura means the arrival of a god or a thing on which a god rides.

Movie "Your Name"

A little further from Hida Takayama, take a local bus for about 35 minutes to reach the Hida Furukawa River, which was featured in the movie Your Name.

Hida Furukawa Station

Hida Furukawa Station is a railroad station on the JR Hida Line and JR Takayama Main Line, and it is also the main station of Hida City, which is known for its sightseeing. In "Your Name," Ko Takashi passes by this station when he goes to Hida City to look for Mitsuba. The station is the best place to take pictures of the scene, and the ground level has been raised so that more moviegoers can take pictures.

Gero Onsen

From Hida Takayama, you can visit Gero Onsen, one of the 3 most famous hot springs in Japan, in about 90 minutes.
Gero Onsen is the largest hot spring resort in Gifu Prefecture, Japan, surrounded by the Hida mountains, and is one of the three most famous hot spring areas in Japan, along with Arima Onsen and Kusatsu Onsen. The hot spring town is filled with a variety of hot spring baths and onsen ryokan (hot spring inns) and is full of the flavor of a hot spring town. The most famous of these hot springs is "Nin-no-yu," which is known for its beauty-enhancing effects on the skin and face. There are many large hot spring inns in the area, and in addition to the hot spring facilities, there are tourist shopping centers in the Gero Onsen Street where visitors can shop for a variety of local specialties.

Day 4-Enjoy World Heritage Shirakawago

Itinerary: 8:50 Takayama Nohi Bus Center → Shirakawa-go → Gajo Village Farm → Takayama Nohi Bus Center → Highway Bus (via Matsumoto) → 21:38 Shinjuku Bus Center.

Shirakawago World Heritage Site

The village of Shirakawa-go was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1995, and has become a popular tourist spot attracting 1.4 million people every year. However, Hagi-machi Street in the center of Shirakawa-go is still a normal place for local people to live. The World Heritage Committee said of Shirakawa-go that it is a perfect combination of the harsh natural environment and traditional culture behind the Hagi-machi houses, as well as the "knots", the mutual aid organizations that still support the villagers today. The local people have adapted the house to the local conditions and used local materials. Not a single nail is used to fix the entire house, and the roof is covered with thatch. The house is named after the shape of the hands that look like the palms of two hands. Nowadays, every 30 to 40 years, the roof thatch is replaced by the local people themselves. Currently, there are many minshuku, lodgings, and restaurants in Shirakawago that are open to the general public.

Four Seasons in Shirakawago

Shirakawa-go, which has been designated as a special snowstorm zone, gets nearly 2 meters of snow in winter (December ~ March). In February, Shirakawa-go holds a lighting ceremony (mid-January to mid-February) in the silence of the snow.
Shirakawago is famous for its scenery in winter, but it is also beautiful in other seasons. In spring, when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, the house is decorated with cherry blossoms. The grass grows and warblers fly in the spring breeze.

Around May, Shirakawa-go is a unique sight with the backdrop of the Wada family, an important cultural property, where women in kimono walk around and plant rice seedlings in rows. It is also a rare place to escape from the heat in the middle of summer.

In the fall, the annual water release training in Hapo Village is also very popular among locals and tourists.

Wada Family, Hapo Village

The Wada house is one of the many houses in the village of Ogijo in Shirakawa-go, and the Ogicho district in which it is located is the largest Ogijo-built house in Shirakawa-go. It was built at the end of the Edo period, and is the only national important house in Shirakawa-go. In addition to the exhibition space, the Wada house is now inhabited by residents, and the first and second floors are partially open to the public, preserving the original traditional style of the house.

Ogi-cho, Shirakawa-mura, Ono-gun, Gifu Prefecture
Transportation.
Takayama Nohi Bus Center → "Takayama Nohi BC (Shirakawago BT line)" (approx. 56 minutes by car) → Get off at "Shirakawago Station" and walk for about 5 minutes to the center of Shirakawago.

Hejiao Village, Shirakawa Heung

The view of Mt. Fuji in the distance seems to be close at hand. The roofs of many of the houses are made of special straw, especially the roofs on both sides of the house, which look like an open book and are shaped like a triangle. This reduces the amount of wind and regulates the amount of sunlight that comes in each day, making the houses warm in winter and cool in summer, making them suitable for people to live in. In addition to traditional crafts, each building also has an information center and a food hall. Twenty-five houses that were used in various parts of Shirakawa-go have been moved and preserved here. In the park, there is a temple, a waterwheel house, a charcoal-burning house, a stable, and other buildings in the style of an ancient village. Visitors can also experience traditional crafts such as dyeing and weaving. At the Soba Dojo, visitors can experience the making of Japanese soba noodles.
