Ueno Park is free admission! Downtown Highball Fest features 65 food and drink stalls.
Ueno in Tokyo isn't just for visiting museums and seeing pandas. From June 11th to June 14th, 2026, you can also enjoy a Highball with a real downtown vibe in Ueno Park. The "Downtown Highball Fest 2026 in Ueno Park" (下町ハイボールフェス2026 in 上野恩賜公園) will be held at Take-no-dai Plaza, the area in front of the fountain. Admission is free, making it a perfect addition to a half-day stroll in Ueno.
This event features 65 booths in total, including 24 liquor booths, 32 food stalls, and 9 festival and PR booths. For Taiwanese travelers, it's not a large music festival that requires purchasing a special ticket, but rather an outdoor food and drink venue that can be naturally incorporated after visiting Ueno Park, Ameya-Yokocho, or the Tokyo National Museum.

What is Shitachi Highball Fest?
The event's highlights are Highballs and various local delicacies, offering everything from classic whiskey Highballs and original shochu Highballs to fruit-flavored options like the Aomori apple Highball. If you usually find Japanese izakayas a bit intimidating, an outdoor event like this is much more approachable. You can directly order whatever drinks or food you fancy, and the atmosphere is even more relaxed than indoors.
In addition to alcoholic beverages, there will also be dishes that pair well with Highballs and traditional festival games. Stalls with a Japanese festival vibe like shooting galleries, ring toss, and goldfish scooping are very friendly for family trips or those experiencing outdoor activities in Japan for the first time. Even those who don't drink alcohol can focus on the snacks and a stroll through Ueno Park.
65 food stalls, suitable for before or after dinner
With so many food stalls, the smartest approach isn't to try everything. Instead, take a stroll around first to see which stalls have a steady crowd, then decide where to start – be it drinks, fried food, skewers, or local specialties. Crowd favorites like Hakata's famous chicken skin skewers, various fried items, grilled mushrooms, oysters, and rice flour churros are all great for sharing.
There are also many highball options. The Aomori Apple Highball is suitable for those who want a refreshing taste, while the original Shochu Highball offers more of a Tokyo downtown izakaya feel. If you visit a museum in the afternoon, it's recommended to enter in the evening when the weather is not as hot and there's a better outdoor drinking atmosphere. When you're with a group, you can each order different flavors and drink them slowly over a few rounds, which is better for pacing than ordering a full table at the beginning.
How should I arrange my itinerary with Ueno to make it flow best?
The venue is at the Take-no-dai Plaza in Ueno Park. It's about a 3-minute walk from the Park Exit of JR Ueno Station, and about a 5-10 minute walk from Ueno Station on other lines. During the day, you can visit the Tokyo National Museum, The National Museum of Western Art, Ueno Zoo, or Shinobazu Pond, and then head to the event venue for food and drinks in the late afternoon.
If you want to buy souvenirs or grab a second bite to eat, it's also convenient to walk to Ameya Yokocho after the event. However, June is the rainy season in Tokyo, so it's recommended to bring a light rain gear. If it rains heavily, the outdoor experience will be much less pleasant, so you can change your plan to a short visit, combined with indoor activities around Ueno Station.

Traveler's tip
These outdoor dining events tend to be more crowded after dusk. If you want to take photos or browse the stalls leisurely, you can arrive a bit earlier. If you want to experience the lively atmosphere, dinner time offers the most festival-like feel. If someone in your group doesn't drink, you can also treat it as a limited-time night market in Ueno Park, enjoying snacks and playing festival games, then leave the alcoholic beverages for those who want them. Ueno Station area has many restrooms, lockers, and train lines, making it easier for independent travelers with short stays to adjust their itinerary on the fly.
